5 Piece Mid-Century Royal Holland Pewter Tea and Coffee Service
A beautiful and complete mid-century Royal Holland Pewter 5-piece tea/coffee service with black wrap accent offered by Snowdrift Antiques.
KMD stands for Royal Metal Industry (formerly J.N. Daalderop & Sons), Tiel, Holland. The company was founded in 1880 and is also known as Royal Holland Pewter. Pewter is one of the world's first metals and was expertly worked into objects of art by the Greeks, Romans, and Chinese. It is a malleable metal alloy consisting of tin, antimony, copper, bismuth, and sometimes, silver that has been made in the Netherlands since the Bronze Age (1900 BC) to make utensils and weapons.
This Royal Holland Pewter tea/coffee service has a unique black wrap accent instead of the typical teak wood accent on the handles and lids. You seldom see this design.
The 5 pieces are in excellent vintage/used condition with some light wear from use. The coffee pot has some coffee stains on the inside, see image 14. The other pieces only have light signs of wear, mostly on the bases where they rubbed as they moved on the tray and they are all bright without tarnish. I only found one very shallow, small dent on the sugar bowl lid, see image 15.
Except for the tray, the pieces all have the Royal Holland Pewter, K.M.D. Tiel, Made in Holland mark. The tray is simply stamped Made in Holland.
The measurements of the various pieces are:
- Coffee pot: 12½” tall, 6½“ wide handle to spout, 4” base diameter and holds about 5 cups (40 fl. oz.)
- Tea pot: 9½” tall, 6“ wide handle to spout, 4” base diameter and holds about 4 cups (32 fl. oz.)
- Sugar pot: 4¾” tall, 3¼” wide at the top, 2¼” wide at the base and holds about 1 cup of sugar
- Creamer: 4½” tall, 3½ “ wide handle to spout, 2¾” base diameter and holds about 1 cups (8 fl. oz.)
- Tray: 14” outer diameter, 12¼” inner diameter, ½“ deep lip
This set oozes that Danish mid-century modern style that is as “in” today as it was in the 1960s. The long, lean lines would complement any mid-century modern home.
We also have a coordinating pewter 3-prong candlestick in the shop with the same black banding accent should you wish to set your coffee or tea table off with some candlelight!
