Danish Teak Dining Room Suite with 8 Chairs
A mid-century Danish, teak dining room table with 8 chairs, offered by Snowdrift Antiques.
This teak dining room suite is comprised of high-quality Danish pieces from two designers. They are from the very early 1960s and were made in Denmark.
First, let’s talk about the table. As mentioned, this beauty is solid teak, designed and built by Povl Dinesen in Denmark sometime before 1963. It is Model PD-700. It is stamped underneath with the Povl Dinesen/Copenhagen mark. It measures 71 inches by 40 wide by 29 ½ high. It has a slight boat-shape with the center being slightly wider than the 37 ½ “ end. It is framed around the edge with a subtle border.
The table comes with two leaves that are each 24” wide, allowing it to extend to 119” in total. One amazing thing about the leaves is that they are the same color as the table with the same beautiful grain. This is almost unheard of with a teak piece this age because typically the leaves are stored most of their lives and the table fades from the sun. This table was kept covered allowing not only the color to match, but it is the rich, original color of the teak in 1964.
The table is in excellent vintage condition, since it was protected all of its life. There are no water rings, heat marks or significant signs of wear. There is some age appropriate signs of use.
The chairs are mid-century classics by renowned Danish designer Erik Buch 1923-1982). Buch used simple organic, smooth lines to craft distinctive mid-century modern designs. Buch first found success with his now-iconic Model 49 chair (1949). The chair features a curved “floating” seat and a classic Scandinavian modern aesthetic. Many of Buch’s designs are named after the year in which they were conceived, especially those produced by the cabinetmaker and furniture manufacture Oddense Maskinsnedkeri. Oddense was renamed O.D. Møbler in the late 1960s or early ‘70s.
This suite come with 8 teak chairs. The six side chairs are Buch Model 49 and the two captain’s chairs are his Model 50. The smooth flowing aesthetic is quintessential Danish. The attention to detail is second to none. Buch won awards in the Carpenters' Guild competitions in 1949, 1952, 1953, and 1954. They are stamped underneath with the Povl Dinesen mark, where they were purchased.
The side chairs have a seat height of 19 inches and a back height of 31 ½. They are 19 ½ inches wide. The Model 50 captain’s chairs are 23 inches wide.
These chairs are in excellent vintage condition. One side chair has an old glue repair that has left it strong and sturdy. See image 12. There is a small blemish on the left arm of one chair. See image 13. These chairs have new 2” thick high-density foam and have been professionally re-covered in Knoll/DIVA/Evergreen fabric. The fabric is the perfect accent to the beautiful color of the teak wood of the chairs. The craftsmanship in the fitting of the fabric to the both the seats and the backs is top-notch work. As part of the very technical re-covering of the detachable seat backs, the wooden buttons that cover the screw holes had to be removed. In order to extend the high level of craftsmanship through the entire process, the buttons were replaced. Extra buttons are included, just in case. A fabric sample and information are also included in case you need to order more.
The paper work in my possession shows this entire suite was purchased on December 1, 1962 at the Povl Dinesen Showroom in Copenhagen, DENMARK.
This suite is one of the prettiest and most well-preserved suites I have ever had the pleasure of listing. It is small enough to serve as your “everyday” dining room table and can be extended to seat 8. The teak is beautiful with its original, rich color. The chairs are restored, dare I say, beyond their former glory.
We also have a teak sideboard and floating hutch that has been with this suite its entire life.
It can be seen here. https://www.snowdriftantiques.com/product-page/mid-century-danish-teak-credenza-and-floating-hutch
