Lane Perception Buffet and Hutch
A mid-century dining room buffet and hutch from the Lane Furniture Perception line, offered by Snowdrift Antiques.
The Lane Furniture Company was founded in Altavista, VA in 1912. For decades they were known for their cedar chests. By 1950 they saw Danish modern furniture imports begin to take hold in households and began to make styles to compete.
This is the sleek and very mid-century walnut dining room buffet and china hutch from Lane’s Perception line. The Perception line models start with “222”. This buffet is model 222-62 while the hutch on top is model 222-63. The marks on back tell us they were produced on Nov 7, 1961 and March 21, 1962 respectively. These are two separate pieces for easier carrying.
The piece is made of walnut and features tapered legs and stretcher bars underneath. The buffet base has two doors with a fixed shelf behind and three drawers with sculpted wooden handles. The doors bear the Perception crosshatch strips inside their frames. The Lane mark is on the inside of the top drawer, along with an original “care of” brochure. The hutch on top has two fixed shelves, both with plate rails for displaying pieces. The interior is covered by two glass doors that have been digitally frosted in these images to reduce glare and reflection.
This piece measures 48 inches in width at its widest by 19 deep by 68 ½ inches high.
This piece is in excellent vintage condition. The wood has been oiled lightly to relieve it from the Colorado dryness. The color and grain are beautiful. The only mark of any significance is some red stain on the middle hutch shelf. See image11.
Lane’s Perception line is one of its most sought after, with that just perfect American mid-century style.
We also have the matching Lane Perception dining room table and chairs which has been together with this hutch its entire life. They would love to remain together.
