Mid-Century Dining Room Suite and China Hutch by Drexel
A mid-century dining room suite and two piece hutch by Drexel Furniture from Snowdrift Antiques.
Drexel Furniture was founded on November 10, 1903 in Drexel, North Carolina. They are known for high end furniture in a wide variety of styles. In the 1950s and 60s they had several lines of furniture that embodied the mid-century modern style that were popular at that time. Drexel is still in business today.
This dining room suite with china hutch is from Drexel’s Profile line, designed by John Van Koert. The Profile line was produced from 1955 to 1961.
The dining room table is Model K-46-4 of the Profile line and is marked underneath. It is made of walnut and was produced in November 1957. It features a drop apron leaf on each end. This makes it extremely flexible in length. With both leaves dropped, it is perfect for 2 at a length of only 26 ½ inches. With both leaves up, it measures 69 ½ “ in length. It has 3 additional 12” leaves that can be inserted for lengths of 81 ½ , 93 ½ or 105 ½ “. It is convex on each side with the apron leaves being slightly curved in towards the end. At the center, it is 42” wide. It stands 30” high. There are brass locks underneath to keep the center junction tightly closed. The table comes with original pads to protect the top finish.
The six side chairs are made of pecan and are Drexel Profile model K-60 Side. They feature a beautiful accent of wooden spindles on the back. They have a back height of 34” with a seat depth of 17 ¾ “ and a seat width of 18”. They have been professionally re-covered in Knoll’s vintage inspired Diva/Green Tea fabric. Note the flawless corner work on the front of the cushion, images 9 & 11.
The two piece walnut hutch is marked as Drexel Profile and was also produced in 1957. The base is model K-35-4. The cabinet up top is model K-35-4A. The base has two small drawers, one lined, in the center with a long drawer underneath. On each side is a door covered storage area with a half shelf in each. Up top the cabinet is lit by an fluorescent light fixture with a cord and plug in back. The walnut framed shelves have frosted glass in the center to allow some light to pass through. They also have plate rails in the shelves. Two sliding glass doors with finger grooves keep the dust out.
With the cabinet sitting on top of the hutch, the piece stands 48” wide by a base depth of 21 ½ “ and a cabinet depth of 14”. It stands 72” in total height.
Overall this set is in excellent vintage condition. There is some minor wear here and there, mostly on the ends of the table legs. The surface is free of water rings and major scratches. It has been well taken care of.
This is a classically American mid-century dining room suite with a china hutch. This set has been together all of its 66 years and will be sold that way.
