Mid-century Dining Room Suite with China Hutch, Broyhill Saga
A mid-century dining room table and 6 chairs by Broyhill with a matching china hutch offered by Snowdrift Antiques.
Broyhill Furniture was founded in 1926 in Lenoir, North Carolina. It began making single furniture pieces, mainly chairs. Soon, their reputation for quality allowed their portfolio to expand to coordinated bedroom and dining room suites. By 1932, despite the Depression Broyhill employed over 100 people. By the 1960s, over 5000 employees helped Broyhill produce more upscale furniture to fit in with the United States’ interest in the Danish modern style that was sweeping the country. After an excellent run of producing well made, stylish furniture, Broyhill closed its doors in September 2018.
The Broyhill Saga group was first produced in the 1960s and was part of the highly touted Premiere line of furniture, that successfully captured the attention of a country becoming enamored with Scandinavian designed furniture. Saga pieces consist of sleek, clean line pieces made from walnut with their signature “stars” embellishments.
This Saga dining room suite consists of the “Extended Table” (#6065-40) with 3 extra leaves. There are 5 “Side Chairs”(#6065-83) and 1 chair with arms called the “Arm Chair” (#6065-82). The 2 piece china hutch is the Saga “Breakfront” (#6065-62) with a credenza and upper cabinet.
The table and chairs feature the graceful, clean lines typical of Saga’s mid-century style. The chairs have the fan back reminiscent of the Broyhill Sculptura and Brasilia lines. The hutch has a 3 drawer, 2 door credenza on the bottom. Up top are 2 glass panel doors and 2 fixed glass panels. Inside are 2 railed shelves. The front of the hutch has the classic Saga stars on the base and the cabinet. The tapered metal and wood handles are classic 1960s style.
The table measures 60” x 40 x 30 ½ H with 3, 12 inch leaves that can extend the table to 72, 84 or 96 inches. The hutch measures 55” x 18 x 70 H.
This suite is in excellent vintage condition. The table top is clean and free of rings, scratches or dark spots. There is some minor, age appropriate wear to the leg tips, but nothing serious. The chairs have been professionally outfitted with new high density foam and mid-century styled fabric by Knoll in a 1960s shade of orange. The credenza has some age appropriate wear on the top. The majority of it is fortunately unseen, underneath the china hutch piece.
This is a beautiful suite that has been together its entire, approximately 60 year, life. It is ready for its new home.
