Mid-century Dining Room Table by Uldum Mobler
A mid-century teak dining room hidden leaf table and six teak dining chairs offered by Snowdrift Antiques.
Uldum Møbelfabrik stands as a cornerstone of the Golden Age of Danish Design. Founded in Jutland, Denmark, this renowned manufacturer was celebrated throughout the 1960s for its uncompromising commitment to quality and functional elegance. Uldum was known for using teak and rosewood with vivid, striking grains combined with superior workmanship in their joinery and seamless construction. Their designs are defined by curved lines and ergonomic comfort, embodying the "restrained chic" that made Scandinavian modernism a global phenomenon.
Johannes Andersen (1903-1991) was a master Danish cabinetmaker whose architectural training informed his iconic furniture designs. He was the main designer at Uldum Møbelfabrik. Andersen’s work is unmistakable for its biomorphic curves and soft, rounded edges that give even solid wood a sense of weightless fluidity. He was a pioneer of the "draw-leaf" system, creating extendable dining tables with hidden leaves that store seamlessly under the tabletop to maintain a clean silhouette. His collaboration with Uldum produced many legendary pieces that have been loved and enjoyed for decades and are very much sought after today.
This teak dining table was produced in Jutland Denmark by Uldum Møbelfabrik, probably in the very early 1960s. It is marked underneath. This design of this dining table by Johannes Andersen is known as draw leaf construction. This allows an extra leaf or leaves, to be stored underneath the main table and pulled out when needed for more space. This table is one of Andersen’s harder to find pieces. It is known as a “hidden leaf” construction. Here the single extra leaf on one end of the table is stored across the width of the table. When it needs to be used it is pulled completely out and dropped into the sliding frame. Of course, the wood grain across the two is continuous.
It is in excellent vintage condition. There are some very minor signs of wear to the top but no water rings or dark spots. It has been oiled lightly to revive the teak. It has a beautiful grain and glowing color.
This table measures 59 ½ inches long by 33 ½ wide and stand 28 ¼ high. With the extra leaf in place, it provides 27 additional inches of length for a total of 86 ½ inches.
The six teak dining room chairs with this table are not made by Uldum Møbelfabrik, since they bear no maker’s mark. They are teak and were made in Denmark. They share rounded edges and flow of lines that are seen in the table. These chairs have padded back rests, making them very comfortable. They have been revitalized with a light oiling. They have been professionally re-covered in Knoll Diva fabric in the rich pattern called “Lagoon”. They also have new high-density 2” foam for comfortable seating. Notice the attention to detail on the corners of the cushions. The chairs have a seat height of 20 inches, a seat width of 19 and a back height of 29 ½. They are in excellent vintage condition.
This dining room table and chairs are a beautiful example of Danish design at its finest. They will instantly create a functional yet sleek mid-century modern aesthetic as the room's central focal point.
