Mid-century Teak Dining Room Suite
A mid-century draw leaf dining room table by Dyrlund with six chairs by Arne Hovmand Olsen, offered by Snowdrift Antiques.
Niels and Jorgen Dyrlund founded the Dyrlund Furniture company in 1960 in Denmark. Dyrlund's furniture is known for its clean lines, simple shapes, and use of natural materials. Dyrlund is still in business today, producing classically beautiful Danish pieces.
Arne Hovmand-Olsen (1919-1989) was a Danish furniture designer who was active in the mid-20th century. He was born in Denmark and trained as a cabinetmaker before studying furniture design at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen.
Hovmand-Olsen began his career as a furniture designer in the late 1940s, and quickly gained recognition for his innovative designs. His furniture was characterized by its clean lines, simplicity, and functionality, and he often used natural materials such as wood and leather. His work was exhibited in museums and galleries around the world.
This is a draw leaf teak table by Dyrlund of Denmark. It was produced in the 1960s. It features a leaf on each end that can be extended for greater seating capacity or slipped in under the main table for a smaller table. It has beautiful teak grain and elegantly tapered legs as you would expect. It is marked with the Dyrlund tag underneath.
It measures 55“ L by 35“ W with the draw leaves in. Each leaf adds 21 ½” to the end. It stands 29“ high.
Seating at the table is provided by six teak chairs designed by Arne Hovmand Olsen for Mogens Kold, a Danish furniture producer in 1960s Denmark. Their curved, bone-shaped back and construction style identify them as Hovmand Olsen creations. They have been professionally re-covered in a very dark cordovan vinyl with a slight texture.
In low light they can appear to be a very dark slate gray to almost black. They have new, high-density foam and are very comfortable. They have a seat height of 17 ½”, a seat width of 18 ½” and a back height of 29”.
This entire suite is in excellent vintage condition. The chairs and table have been oiled lightly to relieve them from the Colorado dryness. The teak glows with beautiful striation and grain. As mentioned, the chairs have new foam and vinyl. The images speak for themselves.
This is a striking mid-century dining suite created by the convergence of two renowned Danish designers. It is classically Danish Modern with its clean lines and minimalist style. After some time in storage, it is ready to once again become a focal point of its space.
