Mid-century Teak Draw Leaf Dining Room Table and Chairs

Mid-century Teak Draw Leaf Dining Room Table and Chairs

$0.00Price

A mid-century, draw leaf teak dining room table and 6 chairs. This is a beautifully crafted Danish dining room table and chairs by two different makers. By the late 1950s to mid-1960s it was often the case that one maker specialized in designing and producing dining room tables, while another maker specialized in chairs. Consumers were then able to buy each from the maker they preferred to have a proper dining room suite. In this case we know precisely who designed and produced the chairs. The designer was Erik Kirkegaard (1929-1986), a Danish furniture designer known for his simple, elegant and functional designs. He was born in Denmark and trained as a cabinetmaker before studying furniture design at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. The stunning, “cow-horn” style captain’s chair is the Model 49 (often cataloged as Model 49B). Its signature design element is the wide, sweeping u-shaped backrest that flows directly into flat, organic armrests. The matching armless version is the Model 48. They carry the same tapered leg architecture and curved back padding, but omit the wrap-around horn armrests to fit more tightly along the sides of a dining table. Both models were made by Høng Stolefabrik of Høng, Denmark. The Høng mark was found underneath the black cambric fabric under the chair. “Stole” is the Danish word for “chair”. The chairs are covered in a cerulean blue woven wool that is excellent condition. The un-marked dining room table origins are a bit more difficult to deduce. It is certainly Danish and was made in the late 1950s to mid-1960s. I have a good idea who made it but I need to do a little more research. If I can confirm it 100%, I will change the listing. This table is known as a draw-leaf table which cleverly features a leaf on each end that can be stored underneath the main table and easily extended for extra space when needed. With the leaves stored underneath, the table measures a compact 51 inches long, while still accommodating 6 chairs. Each leaf adds 21 inches to either end allowing it to be 51, 72 or 93 inches long by 35.5 wide by 29 high. The top is beautifully grained teak where the grain carries on from the main table to the leaf extensions. It gives a beautiful flow to the table when the leaves are extended. The legs taper gracefully as you would expect. This table blends perfectly with the Kirkegaard chairs creating a beautiful Danish dining room suite. This set is in excellent vintage condition. The table and chairs have been oiled lightly to relieve them from the Colorado dryness, allowing the teak grain to glow.
