Set of 8 Mid-century Dining Room Chairs by Drexel Furniture

$1,350.00Price

A set of 8 mid-century dining room chairs from the Declaration line of Drexel Furniture offered by Snowdrift Antiques.

Drexel Furniture was founded in Drexel, North Carolina in 1903 by Samuel Huffman. Under his son Robert's leadership, the company grew and by 1950 the company was a leading manufacturer in traditional and modern furniture.

The Declaration line was designed by Kipp Stewart and Stewart McDougall.

The “classic” Declaration line was first produced in the mid-1950s and is known for its “cat tail” accents on chairs, headboards and some other pieces.  The original Declaration dining room chairs were typically numbered as model 851.

This version of the Declaration line was produced in 1971, as a “late run” transitional production, designed to introduce the upcoming Mediterranean and Heritage lines.  Underneath, you can see this model is numbered 850. These pieces are almost impossible to find and are often confused with Robsjohn-Gibbings chairs from approximately the same era.

Now that the provenance is settled, let’s get on to the features of these beautiful chairs. They are made of solid walnut. They have strong mid-century Colonial Revival styling with four straight spindles connecting the seat to a curved top frame that makes the back of the chair. They have an X-brace underneath for stability. These chairs are very substantial in construction and you will notice that in their weight.

We have six side chairs (850-711) and two captain’s chairs (850-710) which have beautifully curved arms. These chairs have been professionally re-covered with new Knoll fabric in the color Evergreen from the DIVA line and they have new high-density foam. The attention to detail in the re-covering is remarkable.

The chairs have a seat width of 22 inches, a seat height of 20 inches and a back height of 36 inches. The footprint is 18.5 inches deep.

These chairs are in excellent vintage condition. The wood has a beautiful patina from decades of honest use. The new seat materials are both comfortable and beautiful. They have been oiled lightly to relieve them from the Colorado dryness and bring out their beautiful grain. There are a few places I noticed that have small old repairs.

These chairs will provide comfortable, eye-catching seating options for four, six or eight when your table is expanded.
